school life
this is one of those assignments where i wished i had seen my classmates’ pictures before i turned mine in. some of them got great pictures at school events and functions. for some reason, it didn’t even cross my mind to do that. i suppose my pictures reflect what i see everyday.
students flood the hallways as they head to classrooms in mccarthy hall at cal-state fullerton. “this hall turns into rush hour traffic in between classes.” jokesĀ sean brooks, a 2nd year art student.
cal-state fullerton is known as a commuter school. thousands of students travel to school via bicycle every day. “it’s a lot cheaper than a parking pass.” says jordan williams, a first year communications student.
second life
honestly, wasn’t a big fan of this assignment. the second life england island is really boring. there are hardly any structures or landmarks that are instantly recognized as english. i couldn’t find a big ben, london bridge or london eye. i was eventually able to find a few interesting subjects.
i guess i have a thing for phone boxes. i really like the bright red kiosk against the dull, gray, city that is second life england.
the london undergound is a huge part of life in london. it’s a primary means of transportation for thousands of residents. again, i like the color contrast.
an outtake. it’s a spitfire, an iconic wwii raf fighter. the picture’s a little dark and sort of boring. i tried to get an interesting angle, but my second life flying abilities are quite limited.
the dreaded human interest feature
this is easily the most difficult assignment in my comm319 class. trying to capture a unique, unanticipated moment while trying to incorporate the assigned country was really very tough. i searched for british restaurants and specialty stores, hoping i’d be able to shoot something interesting. i found 4 possible locations all in the santa monica area. as i was heading to the 3rd location, i spotted a display red phone box next to an irish pub on santa monica blvd. i decided to try and get a picture of someone walking past the phone box talking, texting or using their cell phone in some way. i thought it would be ironic.
texting on her cell phone, santa monica resident nancy rosas passes by a display red phone box outside mccabe’s bar and grill in santa monica. the phone box is the only phone kiosk for miles and contains no actual telephone. “everybody has a cell phone now. phone booths are a thing of the past.” observes rosas.
the only public phone kiosk for blocks, the display red phone box outside mccabe’s bar and grill in santa monica does not contain an actual telephone. mccabe’s bartender, rob starr says, “it’s an actual phone box from england. it really used to be used. now it’s just for show.”
this is an outtake from the human interest feature. i just thought it was funny how the fake owl used to scare away birds is completely useless against this pigeon.
another outtake. i found this guy at the first location i visited. i couldn’t believe that he was flying a union jack. it was almost too good to be true.
my first 319 assignment, the environmental portrait
since we had to incorporate our assigned country into our pictures, i decided to head over to the los angeles farmer’s market to get some pictures of the english toffee shop, littlejohn’s candies. i asked the shopkeepers if i could take some pictures of them making the toffee. they said yes, but i wasn’t allowed in the kitchen due to insurance reasons and would have to take pictures from the outside. luckily, there were huge windows surrounding the kitchen so i was able to get some shots. i like looking back at pictures that i took at the beginning of the class. i’ve learned so much since then. by the way, littlejohn’s candies has AMAZING peanut brittle.
mike graves, the head toffee maker and owner of littlejohn’s candies at the los angeles farmers market, prepares a batch of the shop’s famous englishtoffee on 2/8/10. “we haven’t changed the recipe in80 years.” explains mike, who has been making toffee at littlejohn’s for 25 years.
head toffee maker and owner of littlejohn’s candies, mike graves stirs a batch of the shop’s famous english toffee at the los angeles farmers market on 2/8/10. “the store has been here at the farmers market for 63 years.” says mike, who has been making the toffee at the store for 25 years.
published pictures
one of my projects in comm 319 was to get a photo assignment from csuf’s daily newspaper, the daily titan. i shot an open meeting between wasc members and students on march 10, 2010. it was challenging to shoot something like a meeting. it really made me look for better angles and and points of view to make the pictures interesting. i was lucky enough to have two images published on the daily titan’s website, and one in the actual newspaper.
